The loss of a loved one brings grief to both children and adults. In times of grief, knowing one is not alone can help ease pain and encourage healing.
When a grieving child or adult is gathered into a safe, supportive and empathetic environment, feelings may be worked through. All kinds of emotions may be expressed.
This special kind of environment may be found at The Amelia Center. The Center was established by Children's Health System, in cooperation with other community interests, to provide a place where children and their families can come to work through their grief. Here they can share their feelings, acknowledge their loss and begin to heal.
We are able to provide individual and family counseling, play therapy, support groups, and crisis response teams at no set fee through the kindness and giving of clients and others who want to make a real difference in the lives of those who have experienced the most devastating losses. The Amelia Center is a place like no other in Alabama that helps people to find meaning in their lives again.
MISSION STATEMENT The mission of The Amelia Center is to provide individual grief counseling, grief groups and grief education to children grieving the death of a family member, as well as parents and families grieving the death of a child; and to offer professional education and training in grief counseling models.
PRINCIPLES The Amelia Center is founded on the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and understanding environment.
