In an effort to better serve our community, The Amelia Center is expanding our group counseling program this summer. We are very excited about offering a variety of new groups, and you may certainly choose to attend more than one group.
People are often reluctant to attend groups, and some of you may be asking yourself, “Why should I attend a group?” Irvin Yalom, well-known psychotherapist, lists several reasons that groups work so well.
The top five are: 1. Helping others gives members a sense of well-being. 2. Realizing others are struggling with similar problems eases feelings of isolation. 3. Hopefulness is gained from the expectation that the group will work. 4. Talking about your challenging life situation brings insight and relief. 5. Feeling a sense of connectedness to each other creates a sense of community.
Reach out and join in this summer. You will likely find that in helping others cross the bridge over troubled waters, you get to the other side as well. Contact Valeri Cowart, Group Counseling Coordinator, to get more information and register for a group. Valeri.Cowart@chsys.org or (205) 251.3430.
